Professional Sewer Services
A sewer blockage is more serious than a blocked drain — it affects your entire property and can cause contamination, flooding, and structural damage if not resolved quickly. Our sewer specialists carry industrial-grade equipment to diagnose and clear even the most stubborn main-line blockages across Johannesburg.
Warning Signs of a Sewer Blockage
- Sewage backing up through floor drains, toilets, or shower traps
- All drains in the house slowing down at the same time
- Strong sewage odour from manholes, inspection eyes, or outdoor gullies
- Wet, soggy patches on the lawn above where the sewer line runs
- Gurgling or bubbling sounds from multiple fixtures when flushing
- Visible sewage seepage around manhole covers or inspection chambers
A sewer blockage is a time-critical problem. Every hour of delay increases the risk of sewage flooding into your property and contaminating living or working spaces. If you notice more than one of these signs, call us immediately — don't wait to see if it clears on its own.
How We Clear a Sewer Blockage
Emergency Contact
Call us immediately. A sewer backup can cause contamination and property damage within hours. We prioritise sewer emergencies over routine callouts.
CCTV Sewer Survey
We insert a camera to locate the blockage, determine its cause (roots, collapse, grease, foreign objects), and assess the pipe condition upstream and downstream.
High-Pressure Clearing
Using industrial jetting equipment rated up to 4,000 PSI, we blast through the obstruction and flush the line clean. For root masses, we use mechanical cutters first.
Verification & Report
A post-clearing CCTV check confirms the line is fully open. We provide a video report and advise on any structural repairs or maintenance needed to prevent recurrence.
Sewer Unblocking FAQ
What is the difference between a drain blockage and a sewer blockage?
A drain blockage affects a single fixture — one sink, one shower, one toilet. A sewer blockage affects the main line that carries waste from your entire property to the municipal connection. When the sewer blocks, multiple fixtures back up simultaneously and sewage can overflow through the lowest drain point (usually a ground-floor shower or floor drain).
How long does it take to clear a sewer blockage?
Most sewer blockages are cleared within 1 to 2 hours once we arrive. Complex blockages involving collapsed pipes, heavy root masses, or long pipe runs can take 3 to 4 hours including CCTV diagnosis. We'll give you a realistic timeframe after the initial inspection.
Is a sewer backup a health hazard?
Yes. Raw sewage contains bacteria, viruses, and parasites that pose serious health risks. If sewage has entered your home, avoid contact with the contaminated area, keep children and pets away, and do not use affected fixtures until the line is cleared. We recommend professional sanitisation after any indoor sewage overflow.
Who is responsible for the sewer line — me or the municipality?
You are responsible for the private sewer lateral from your house to the municipal connection point (usually at or near your property boundary). The municipal main in the road is the council's responsibility. We can run a CCTV camera to determine exactly where the blockage sits and whether it's on your side or the municipality's.
Can tree roots really block a sewer line?
Absolutely. Tree roots are the most common cause of sewer blockages in established Johannesburg suburbs. Roots enter through pipe joints, cracks, and poorly sealed connections. Once inside, they grow rapidly in the nutrient-rich environment and can completely fill a 160mm sewer pipe within 12 to 18 months. Annual root cutting is recommended for properties with large trees near sewer lines.
